The theme this month is Divine Feminine. October 2014 is a festive month which celebrates the feminine in all its myriad forms – from the gentle Sita who can be termed as the epitome of sacrifice to Goddess Durga who is the courageous woman who stood up for her rights and injustice to Goddess Kali who is the symbol of destruction of evil and all that is no longer beneficial for the world at large.
October begins with the ongoing Navratras which are the nine nights of celebration of Goddess Durga followed by Dussehra. According to legend, Ram prayed to the goddess to help him defeat Ravana who had kidnapped Ram’s wife, Sita. Ram killed Ravana on the 10th day which is commonly celebrated as Dussehra. On a larger level, it is the victory of good over evil. But at the subtle level, many narratives are woven into this story.
This is followed by Diwali which celebrates the prosperity of mankind in the form of Goddess Lakshmi. In some parts of India, people worship Goddess Kali during this time as her energies are believed to be at a high as she slays the demon (negative energies and thoughts) to pave way for the positive to come into our life.
The worship of the goddess is not just to pray and venerate the divine energies, it is to also uphold and celebrate the feminine within each and every individual. Both man and woman have masculine as well as the feminine aspect. The logical and practical aspect is the masculine energy. The nurturing, caring and intuitive aspect is the feminine energy. By worshiping the feminine forms of energy, we are actually nurturing our feminine aspects.
Human form devoid of the feminine energy would not be able to keep any form. It will be blind action without any nurturing or creative aspect. The feminine energy is like the oil which lubricates the machinery and makes it work effortlessly. It is about flow, effortlessness and ease.
As a feminine energy, it’s easier to surrender to the divine which makes our spiritual path easier and helps us grow spiritually. Men need to get in touch with their feminine side to access the surrender and grace to grow.
Feminine energy is not only about feminist rights and struggle, it’s about embracing the feminine, soft, nurturing, caring and intuitive side within. Even for women, this is relevant because today women have also forgotten their feminine side as they compete with men to create their own space in the society. I am not an anti-feminist, but I am find the idea that women and men are equals or need to be equal a little jarring. Both the genders have their own space, discriminating for or against based on genitals sounds like a strange idea.
Women need to accept their feminine self as well while men need to acknowledge their feminine aspects. Lack of this energy is responsible for a lot of imbalances in the world today like an imbalance of power, resources, wars, struggles and conflicts. It’s an abundant universe where everyone can exist in cooperation and unity instead of competition.
As women accept their feminine side, they will become more empowered in themselves. Then the need to be equal to men will not arise because they will be filled with self-esteem and self-confidence. They will not consider their work – even the housework – as measly and non-productive. They will value who they are and what they do.
As men accept their feminine side, they will become more grounded and use their energies and creative side to solve problems instead of brute force. They will be better fathers, husbands, sons and citizens of the planet.
